Fishery Notice - Fisheries & Oceans Canada

Subject: FN0278-Fisheries and Oceans Canada to Conduct a Major Survey of the Financial Performance of the Pacific Commercial Fisheries

Starting in mid-May 2005, Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) will be conducting the Survey of Vessel Costs and Earnings.  This survey was previously done in 1985, 1988, 1991 and 1994.  The current survey will focus on fishing operations during 2004.

The goal is to produce a public report showing key financial statistics for the "average" vessel in each commercial fishery.  Only fleet averages will be reported.  In accordance with privacy requirements, all information gathered during the survey will be treated in strict confidence and no individual information will be shared or released.

The information produced by the survey will be publicly available.  Individual fishers will be able to compare their financial performance to the average for their fishery.  The information will be used by DFO to help assess management and policy decisions.

Approximately one third of the Pacific commercial fleet has been randomly selected for participation in the survey.  Owners of those vessels will be contacted to arrange a convenient time and location for interview.  DFO hopes that everyone contacted will complete the survey, since the level of participation will determine the quality of the resulting report.
